Liberia

Liberia

Civil war and government mismanagement destroyed much of Liberia's economy, especially the infrastructure in and around the capital, Monrovia. Many businesses fled the country, taking capital and expertise with them, but with the conclusion of fighting and the installation of a democratically-elected government in 2006, several have returned. Liberia has the distinction of having the highest ratio of direct foreign investment to GDP in the world. Richly endowed with water, mineral resources, forests, and a climate favorable to agriculture, Liberia had been a producer and exporter of basic products - primarily raw timber and rubber. Local manufacturing, mainly foreign owned, had been small in scope.

President JOHNSON SIRLEAF, a Harvard-trained banker and administrator, has taken steps to reduce corruption, build support from international donors, and encourage private investment. Embargos on timber and diamond exports have been lifted, opening new sources of revenue for the government. The reconstruction of infrastructure and the raising of incomes in this ravaged economy will largely depend on generous financial and technical assistance from donor countries and foreign investment in key sectors, such as infrastructure and power generation.

Past Success Story: Clean Water for the first time for a small Village in Liberia!

For many months our longtime Ministry partners, led by our good friend Pastor Elwood, in a small village 45 minutes outside of Monrovia Liberia called “Kleemu” have been desperately pleading for a clean water program for their village. In all of the village’s long history NEVER has there been a source of clean water before. Of course, with this stark reality it’s no challenge to imagine the many diseases, sicknesses and even deaths that dirty water has caused in Kleemu over it’s more than 100 year existence.

That’s why Children’s Hunger Relief Fund was so excited to share with Pastor Elwood and our ministry partners that thanks to the generosity of our donors and friends we were able to finally grant them their dream come true, a source of clean water for not only the children of their village but for all people and families! Our partners were so grateful they were speechless and shocked. Pastor Elwood shared with us that one woman in particular, who is 90 years old and has lived in Kleemu for her entire life,  said it was one of the greatest miracles she had witnessed in her long life. Can you imagine your emotions after finding out your entire village, whom never before had clean water, could now safely drink from a clean water source?

We are so honored and touched to partner with incredible partners like Pastor Elwood of Liberia and to be able to encourage his great Christian acts of Mercy and Kindness to the local children and families of his Kleemu ministry.

From All of us at CHRF, thank you for making beautiful stories like these possible for others!

As Jesus taught us in one of the most important lessons of the Bible, “So in everything, do unto others as you would have them do unto you” Matthew 7:12. We are so excited to be seeking after opportunities like this one in Liberia to follow the teachings of Jesus.
